Numbers: Journey to the Promised Land Lesson 4

Lesson 4: The Spy Mission: Remember (Chapters 13 -14)

Poised on the edge of the Promised Land, the Israelites were camped in the wilderness at Kadesh Barnea. Oh, so close, to entering the promises of God. They were hot, and tired and weary. Will they choose to trust that God has their best interest in mind at all times? Will thety believe he will give them the strength to defeat the giants?

(12:44)

(3 min. You may wish to start the lesson with this one! It is so good, and sets the stage!)

Discussion Questions:

  1. Share something new you may have noticed about this account that you didn't know before.

  2. What was the first report that the men shared when they returned? What was the second report? Was the second report truthful? How was Caleb’s report different?

  3. Why did the people become angry and violent? Who were they angry with? What were they afraid of?

  4. Note the progression of fear listed in the text as it relates to what happened during Covid. Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not?

  5. What strategy did Joshua and Caleb use to not become fearful and stay rational?

  6. How was this incident another test that the Israelites failed to pass?

  7. The judgment that came upon the camp from God was taken as an oath, which means it could not be altered. Why do you think that the Lord pronounced such a serious penalty?

  8. A repentant Israel changed their mind the next day and went up to battle without the blessing of the Lord. What was the result? How does this apply to our own lives?

4:46. Some photos of what the area looks like!

I like the first minute or so on this one because it shows the map of the journey.
