Elisha: God's Prophet Lesson 3 " The Widow and the Shunammite: It's all About Love!"

Elisha showed love to two women by praying for them and allowing God to use him to provide for their needs. For the widow, and for the wealthy woman of faith who had first shown kindness to him, Elisha became a vessel through which God's love was “poured out” like oil, symbolizing the Holy Spirit. Through this divine provision, both families experienced total restoration.

Elisha was a kind and thoughtful man, consistently exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit in his daily life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. His ministry reflected God's deep care and compassion for ordinary people—people like you and me. A true prophet, or “man of God”  operating under the Holy Spirit, is rarely critical, judgmental, or harsh. Elisha’s life exemplified this truth.

Discussion Questions:

  1. This lesson impacts people in many different ways. What did God reveal to you while watching this lesson?

  2. What might it have been like to be in the situation that the wife of one of the Sons of the Prophets was in? Why do you think the others did not help her? How did Elisha know that God was going to help her? Did he pray about it, or somehow just know? What impact might this event have on the life of her two sons?

  3. How did the woman from Shunem know that Elisha was a prophet?

  4. Elisha was God’s servant, to assist Him in doing what God wanted to do. Was Elisha actually doing miracles? Why or why not?

  5. How did God provide for Elisha’s needs? Is that another miracle hidden in the text?

  6. When Jesus walked the earth, he operated in many ways in the same way as Elisha. How were they similar? How were they different?

  7. Why do you think the woman from Shunem did not want her husband to know that their son was dead?

  8. Who exhibited strong faith in this lesson? Why didn’t a miracle happen when Gehazi laid Elisha’s staff of God’s authority over the boy?

  9. In what way did Elisha show love in this lesson?

  10. Why is it important that a person with the gift of miracles be a loving person?

  11. Elisha did not give up. He was persistent.  Can you think of a time you did not give up and it paid off?

  12. Have you ever known a person who seemed to have spiritual gifts but had no compassion? Tell what happened. Could this person actually be operating in a false spirit?
