David: Anointed Warrior Part 8: Ahinoam

There are not very many clues in scripture, or in literature about Ahinoam. She is listed as David’s first wife (excluding Michal). several times in the Bible, in (1 Samuel 27:3, 30:5 and 2 Samuel 2:2), suggesting she was married to David before he married Abigail. However the Bible is vague about this point. These are some things that we do know:
Ahinoam is the mother of David’s firstborn son, Amnon, who was born in Hebron when David was King of Judah. Therefore, she has the status of being the mother of the crown prince, David’s firstborn.
Ahinoam came from Jezreel, a city in the territory of Issachar. The scriptures do not tell us how she met David. Certainly, an alliance with the tribe of Issachar would help David’s claim to the throne later.
Ahinoam was in exile with David, during the time he was in the land of the Philistines.
Abigail was also married to David at the time.
Abigail, also had a baby in Hebron, David’s second born son.
Have you ever been in a crisis? What happened? Who was with you? How did you respond? In this Biblical account, both Abigail and Ahinoam are in a crisis. David is in a crisis, too. As you watch the lesson, think about this question: How can we strengthen ourselves in the Lord in the middle of a crisis?
(13:02)
Scriptures:
1 Samuel 29,30, Psalm 62
Discussion Questions:
David was marching with the Philistines and his mighty men AGAINST Israel. Why do you think he was doing that? Would he have really fought against Israel? What did God do to make sure he did not have to do that?
Why did the men want to stone David?
All things work together for good. How did God make that happen in this disaster?
David not only recovered the people taken and all their goods and animals, but was able to plunder the camp of the enemy as well. This plunder was used to pay back the many people who had helped him while hiding in the strongholds, also setting himself up to be king. How can we plunder the camp of the enemy through prayer? Tell of a time this happened to you!
Do you agree with David that the men watching the supplies deserved equal share of the spoil?
What personal promise did God keep in this lesson? Has God ever given you a personal promise? What was it? Did it eventually come true?
David hit a definite low point when he returned to Ziklag. What do you think David did to “draw strength from the Lord” or “encourage himself in the Lord his God” in the middle of the crisis? How did this help the crisis he was in from escalating?
What do you do when you hit a low point, or are in a crisis? How do you encourage yourself in the Lord?
Why did Saul lose all, and David recover all?

A Calm Resolve to Wait for the Salvation of God
To the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. Psalm 62
Truly my soul silently waits for God;From Him comes my salvation.
He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense;I shall not be greatly moved.
How long will you attack a man?You shall be slain, all of you,Like a leaning wall and a tottering fence.
They only consult to cast him down from his high position; They delight in lies; They bless with their mouth,But they curse inwardly. Selah
My soul, wait silently for God alone,For my expectation is from Him.
He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense;I shall not be moved.
In God is my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength,And my refuge is in God.
Trust in Him at all times, you people;Pour out your heart before Him;God is a refuge for us. Selah
Surely men of low degree are a vapor,Men of high degree are a lie;If they are weighed on the scales,They are altogether lighter than vapor.
Do not trust in oppression,Nor vainly hope in robbery; If riches increase,Do not set your heart on them.
God has spoken once,Twice I have heard this:That power belongs to God.
Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy; For You render to each one according to his work.
