David: Anointed Warrior Part 3: Michal

In this lesson, you will meet Michal, David's first wife. She was the daughter of King Saul and the sister of Jonathan. Her older sister, Merab, was promised to David for killing Goliath. But Saul gave her hand in marriage to another. Saul, upon hearing the Michal was in love with David , offered him the chance to marry Michal for the price of 100 foreskins of the Philistines! David agreed, and then delivered to Saul 200 foreskins of the Philistines for her hand in marriage! This now meant that David was the son-in-law of the king, and he sat at the family table.

Sounds like a fairy tale, right? Handsome warrior marries the lovely princess! But this couple did not live happily ever after! Why? What went wrong?

As you listen to the lesson, think about that question! Also note any new things we can learn about David from this Biblical narrative. For lesson plans, CLICK HERE!

Scriptures

1 Samuel 18 and 19,  1 Chronicles 15 and 16, 2 Samuel 6:12-23, 2 Samuel 21:1-14,  1Chronicles 16: 8-36, Psalm 59

Discussion Questions:

  1. If you were Michal, would you have followed David into the wilderness? Why or Why not?

  2. Why do you think David did not try to rescue Michal while he was in exile all those years?

  3. Do you think Michal was really in love with David? Why or why not?

  4. Why did David insist on Michal being returned to him?

  5. According to the Torah, (First five books of the Bible)  was David doing the right thing in demanding Michal be returned to him?

  6. What was Michal’s greatest problem?

  7. David was not embarrassed to worship before the Lord– by publicly dancing and praising Yahweh. What could we learn from his behavior?

  8. Why do you think that Michal never had any children of her own? Michal did raise her sister Merab’s 5 children. What happened to them?

  9. What new things did we learn about David in this lesson? Who was his real first love?

  10. Have you ever been embarrassed to worship publicly? Why do you think that is?

  11. Michal became bitter after returning to David. If you were in her position what would you have done?

  12. Michal’s bitterness only made things worse. Tell of a time you became bitter. Tell how you overcame the bitterness.

Read out loud  Psalm 59, which David wrote regarding Saul’s pursuit of him, when he was in the home he shared with his wife, Michal.

The Assured Judgment of the Wicked

To the Chief Musician. Set to“Do Not Destroy.” A Michtam of David when Saul sent men, and they watched the house in order to kill him.

Psalm 59

Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;Defend me from those who rise up against me.

Deliver me from the workers of iniquity,And save me from bloodthirsty men.

For look, they lie in wait for my life;

The mighty gather against me,

Not for my transgression nor for my sin, O Lord.

They run and prepare themselves through no fault of mine.

Awake to help me, and behold!

You therefore, O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel,

Awake to punish all the nations;

Do not be merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah

At evening they return,They growl like a dog,

And go all around the city.

Indeed, they belch with their mouth;

Swords are in their lips;For they say, “Who hears?”

But You, O Lord, shall laugh at them;

You shall have all the [d]nations in derision.

I will wait for You, O You his Strength;For God is my defense.

My God of mercy shall come to meet me;

God shall let me see my desire on my enemies.

Do not slay them, lest my people forget;

Scatter them by Your power,

And bring them down,O Lord our shield.

For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips,

Let them even be taken in their pride,

And for the cursing and lying which they speak.

Consume them in wrath, consume them,That they may not be;

And let them know that God rules in Jacob

To the ends of the earth. Selah

And at evening they return,They growl like a dog,

And go all around the city.

They wander up and down for food,

And howl if they are not satisfied

But I will sing of Your power;

Yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning;

For You have been my defense

And refuge in the day of my trouble.

To You, O my Strength, I will sing praises;

For God is my defense,My God of mercy.
