The biblical accounts of David’s anointing by Samuel and his battle with Goliath are both well known. Many Christians and even non Christians know the narrative well.Seeing David through his father’s eyes helps us consider those same well known narratives from a different point of view. As you listen to the lesson, make a list of all character traits of David that you notice from this lesson, just as you did Saul in Lesson 1. Also, be sure to write down names of places or mark them on your map.
David was not a boy, but most likely a young man between the ages of 18 and 19 when he killed Goliath. Israel’s military age was 20. David would be considered still a “youth” but David was no wimp. He already had a reputation as a man of valor. Here is how a servant of Saul describes David during the time period after the anointing, and before the battle of Goliath. 1 Samuel 16:18 says, “18…“Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him.” A mighty man of valor, does not sound like a boy to me! Does it to you?

Discussion Questions:
Brainstorm a list of character traits of David.
What is your favorite part of this narrative?
What is your favorite David quote from this lesson?
Do you think all of David’s brothers were jealous of him? Why or why not? What was going through the brothers’ minds when David was anointed by Samuel?
How did David change from the time of his anointing to the time he fought Goliath? What happened during this time period?
How did David and his brothers treat their father?
Most scholars agree David was 16- 18 years old when he was first called to Saul. The military age was 20. David was probably 19 when he fought Goliath. (Soon after the Goliath showdown, David was a leader in the army.) David must have been at least 6 feet tall, or he wouldn’t have tried on Saul’s armor. Does this change the narrative for you? Why or why not?
David was in a fight to the death. How does knowing this change your respect for David?
What was going through the brothers’ minds when David was anointed by Samuel?
If you were Jesse, what would you say to David when you saw him next?
Why did God have his prophets “anoint" his chosen ones with oil? What did that mean? (Holy spirit/oil)
David was chosen because he was a man after God’s own heart. What exactly does that mean? How do we become men or women after God’s own heart?
Closure and Final Prayer: As a group, pray out loud Psalm 8. Then close with this prayer:Lord, May we desire to please you as David did, and give us hearts like David. Give us your love and we give ours in return. Show us constantly your mighty hand, and allow us to be your servants, like David. Amen
A Psalm of David.
Psalm 8
O Lord, our Lord,How excellent is Your name in all the earth,Who have set Your glory above the heavens!
Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infantsYou have [ordained strength,Because of Your enemies,That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.
When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
What is man that You are mindful of him,And the son of man that You visit[c] him?
For You have made him a little lower than the angels,And You have crowned him with glory and honor
You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet,
All sheep and oxen—Even the beasts of the field,
The birds of the air,And the fish of the sea that pass through the paths of the seas.
O Lord, our Lord,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth!
