David: Anointed Warrior Part 4: Jonathan

David and Jonathan, Jonathan and David. A famous friendship. Two men, both in line to become the next king of Israel. One, the rightful heir, the other, anointed by Samuel, God’s prophet. Jonathan was a great warrior, David was a great warrior. Both men loved God. But David was chosen by God to be the next king instead of Jonathan. What was Jonathan’s response? Saul’s response? David’s response? What would your response have been?

Discussion Questions:
What part of this lesson was your favorite? Why?
Why was Saul so angry with David? With Jonathan? With Michal? With everyone?
According to scholars, David and Jonathan were not the same age, but at least 10- 20 years apart. Does this change how you see their relationship? Why or why not?
Jonathan was not jealous of David, like Saul was. Why was that? How do we know Jonathan was not jealous of David?
Saul was not a “man of God” but Jonathan was. What clues can we find in the Bible text to support this statement? Why could Jonathan see the truth about David, but Saul could not?
Have you ever been jealous of someone more anointed or gifted than yourself? How did you respond? How does being jealous show that your heart is not right with God?
If Jonathan truly loved David, why do you think he did not leave Saul and hang out with David and his mighty men? Did Jonathan’s sense of duty to family come before his dedication to Yahweh’s purposes and plans? Or was Yahweh directing Jonathan to stay with his father?
Did Jonathan always obey his father, Saul? Do you think this upset God? Name a few times he did not obey.
