Have you ever heard of the Bible character, Abiathar? If you are like most people, he is not very well known. I chose to include him in our study for many reasons. As you watch the video, make a decision. Is he a good guy or a bad guy? What was it he did when his life was in ruins?
"I am Abiathar, son of Ahimelech the high priest, of the priestly line of Eli. We lived and served in Nob, the city of the priests, where the tabernacle of the LORD stood in those days, and where my father presided over the ministry of the altar. The air in Nob smelled of incense and fresh bread- the showbread that was set before the LORD in the Holy Place each Sabbath and replaced by new loaves..."

Discussion Questions:
Why do you think David was compelled to lie to Ahimelech? What was his lie?
Was the priest right in letting David have the showbread from the holy place? What do the scriptures say? What did Jesus say? (See Matthew 12:3-4))
Why do you think so many men were coming to join David in the stronghold?
Why did God spare David, and not the family of Ahimelech? Check out 1 Samuel 2:27-36.
When David fled to Gath, he was following his fear instead of His God. Psalm 34 grew out of his narrow escape from Achish. Take time to read it now.
David inquired of the Lord, before going into battle. What was the ephod? Why was that important? Who could use it?
Saul is criticized by God for not killing all of the animals taken from the Amalakites and also for sacrificing to Yahweh before Samuel arrived, disobeying his instructions. What do you think was going through Saul’s mind?
Saul’s sin of killing all the priests was not his most egregious sin, from God’s point of view. What was it Saul did that made him lose the kingdom?
How does Abiathar show us to move on with God after losing a family member?
What new things did we learn about David in this lesson? Did David sin in this lesson? How?
Saul had everything in his favor when he was anointed king. A strong body 10:23, a humble mind 9:21, a new heart 10:9, spiritual power 10: 10, loyal friends 10:26 and the guidance and prayers of Samuel. In spite of this he failed miserably. Why?
David was able to regain his equilibrium in the stronghold. Abiathar, too. And David’s family. Have you ever pulled into the stronghold? Tell what happened.
Has God ever sent you “mighty men” to help you in the stronghold?

To the Chief Musician. Set to “The Silent Dove in Distant Lands.” A Michtam of David when the Philistines captured him in Gath. Psalm 56
Be merciful to me, O God, for man would swallow me up;Fighting all day he oppresses me.
My enemies would hound me all day,For there are many who fight against me, O Most High.
Whenever I am afraid,I will trust in You.
In God (I will praise His word),In God I have put my trust;I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?
All day they twist my words; All their thoughts are against me for evil.
They gather together,They hide, they mark my steps,When they lie in wait for my life.
Shall they escape by iniquity? In anger cast down the peoples, O God!
You number my wanderings;Put my tears into Your bottle; Are they not in Your book?
When I cry out to You,Then my enemies will turn back; This I know, because God is for me.
In God (I will praise His word),In the Lord (I will praise His word),
In God I have put my trust;I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
Vows made to You are binding upon me, O God;I will render praises to You,
For You have delivered my soul from death.Have You not kept my feet from falling,That I may walk before GodIn the light of the living?
The Happiness of Those Who Trust in God
A Psalm of David when he pretended madness before Achish, who drove him away, and he departed. Psalm 34
I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul shall make its boast in the Lord; The humble shall hear of it and be glad.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me,And let us exalt His name together.
I sought the Lord, and He heard me,And delivered me from all my fears.
They looked to Him and were radiant,And their faces were not ashamed
This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him,And saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him,And delivers them.
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good;Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him
The young lions lack and suffer hunger; But those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing
Come, you children, listen to me;I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
Who is the man who desires life,And loves many days, that he may see good?
Keep your tongue from evil,And your lips from speaking deceit.
Depart from evil and do good;Seek peace and pursue it
The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,And His ears are open to their cry.
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,To [c]cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears,And delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart,And saves such as have a contrite spirit.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous,But the Lord delivers him out of them all. He guards all his bones; Not one of them is broken.
Evil shall slay the wicked,And those who hate the righteous shall be [e]condemned.
The Lord redeems the soul of His servants,
And none of those who trust in Him shall be condemned
